Quality, Patient Safety and Patient Experience

At the Orthopedics Institute, we work hard to see that your child has access to safe and effective treatments. We also want to make sure your family has the best experience possible while we are caring for your child. This is why we measure our quality, patient safety and patient experience.

Quality and patient safety metrics for our Spine Program

We measure a variety of quality and patient safety metrics for our Spine Program to ensure we’re providing the best care possible. These measurements include data for:

  • Length of hospital stay
  • Spine surgical infection rate
  • Blood loss estimates
  • Patient volume for spinal fusion surgery

Review our most recent spine surgery quality and patient safety data.

Patient experience at the Orthopedics Institute

What are patient/family experience ratings?

At the Orthopedics Institute, we measure patient and family experience through telephone surveys about a child and family’s experience. This measure is based on how each patient/family answers the question: “Using any number from 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst facility possible and 10 is the best facility possible, what number would you use to rate this facility?”

Why do we measure patient experience?

It’s important to us that every patient and family has an excellent experience at the Orthopedics Institute, which is why we ask families to share feedback about their experience after they leave the hospital.

By gaining feedback about what we're doing well and what we could do better, we're able to continually improve the experience we provide for our patients and their families.

Our 2017 patient experience scores

We’re proud of our quality-of-care ratings by families. Below are the percentages of families that rated their experience as a 9 or 10 (on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest) in 2017:

  • Orthopedics Institute: 82.2%
  • Rehabilitation Program: 84.5%
  • Sports Medicine Center: 85.9%

Below is a breakdown of how families rated their overall quality of care for the Orthopedics Institute, Rehabilitation Program and Sports Medicine Center last year:

82.2% of families rated their experience with our Orthopedics Institute as a 9 or 10 (on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the highest) in 2017.

84.5% of families rated their experience with our Rehab Program as a 9 or 10 (on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the highest) in 2017.

85.9% of families rated their experience with our Sports Medicine Center as a 9 or 10 (on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the highest) in 2017.

The above chart represents patient satisfaction scores for the overall quality of care at our Sports Medicine Center from January through September (Q3) of 2017. In Q4 of 2017, the hospital switched to a new data collection tool and information is not available during that transition period. We will update this page as soon as the annual 2018 data becomes available.

Even though we already compare favorably to orthopedics programs at children's hospitals in the country, our goal is to deliver excellent care every time we interact with you.

How has the Orthopedics Institute at Children’s Colorado been able to improve experience rates?

We use each family’s feedback to improve our performance on everything from the way we schedule appointments to the way we care for patients and interact with families. We’re also focused on improving access by getting patients in for an appointment the same day or next day, and then seeing them on-time when they arrive.

What is the source of this data?

A third-party company conducts the telephone surveys on our behalf and then compiles the patient experience data.

How often will this information be updated?

We continually track patient experience and publicly report the information on a regular basis on this website. If you ever feel that any part of your care is not excellent, please let us know so we can work with you to resolve any problems. And, if you receive a patient experience survey phone call, please take the time to share your honest feedback. It helps us learn more about how we can exceed your expectations.
